DESCRIPTION :

What is a critical essay, and why the hell would anyone ever choose to write one? In beginning to answer that question, this workshop draws on several strands of critique, ranging from the rich academic traditions of feminist and queer theories to the circulation of academic-adjacent and fully non-academic essays as forms of cultural criticism more broadly.

Designed both for writers and for those who don’t (yet) consider themselves in that category, this workshop is for anyone who wants to engage with writing as a living practice of experimentation. Over these two hours, we will practice with the play and rigor of courting our ideas, developing a relational process, and the epic highs and lows of committing to the bit.

THIS WORKSHOP MIGHT BE FOR YOU IF :

👀 you haven’t written an essay outside of school before and don’t really get why anyone would

👀 you enjoy writing essays on your own time and want to fine tune your process

👀 you love reading other people’s takes on books/film/culture and want to write your own

👀 you think it might be cool to reclaim something you had to do for class on your own terms

IN THIS WORKSHOP WE WILL:

🐚 get clearer on whatever the hell a “critical essay” even is—and the horizon of what it can be

🐚 discuss the concept of your “intervention” and why it matters in coming up with/refining ideas

🐚 talk about how and when to incorporate yourself into your essay as an object of study

🐚 go over a couple of critical essay excerpts and discuss what makes them work
